HalbanHalban, Philippe
(Department of Genetic Medicine and Development, CMU, Geneva, Switzerland)

Dr. Halban's research has been devoted to the study of the pancreatic ß-cell and more specifically how insulin is made and secreted. His studies have helped unravel how proinsulin is converted to insulin and how the insulin is stored in granules prior to its release. He also studies ß-cell replication and apoptosis. Much of the knowledge gained by such studies is now being applied to the creation of surrogate ß-cells for cell replacement therapy of Type I diabetes and for the understanding of ß-cell failure in diabetic states.

Dr. Halban was president of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) and of its Foundation (EFSD) for the period 2001-2004 and is currently Chairman of EFSD. He is the author of over 100 research papers and of numerous reviews and book chapters.

(Centro di Ricerca E. Menni, Fondazione Poliambulanza - Istituto Ospedaliero, Brescia, Italy)

Since 2002 Dr. Ornella Parolini has been the Director of the Research Centre E. Menni, Fondazione Poliambulanza, Brescia.
After graduating with a degree in biology in 1988 from the University of Milan she embarked in the field of immunodeficiencies research, initially at the University in Brescia and later at the St. Jude Children’s Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, USA. She earned her Doctorate in 1994 in "Molecular and Cellular Biotechnologies applied to the biomedical field." From 1995 until 2002 she worked as a visiting scientist and later as the head of a Molecular Immunology laboratory focused on the study of the regulation of genes fundamental for the development and the correct function of the immune system.
During her career she has written numerous scientific publications in international journals. Dr. Parolini has delivered over 30 invited lectures, is listed as an author in over 60 peer-reviewed publications and several book chapters, and has 3 patents pending from her current research field focused on placenta-derived stem cells.
She is also a member of 10 Scientific Societies, and the first President of the recently founded “International Placenta Stem Cell Society.”

Stauss, Hans Josef
(Department of Immunology and Molecular Pathology, Royal Free & UCL Medical School, London, United Kingdom)

Professor Hans Stauss is currently the Clinical Director of Immunology, Endocrinology and Diabetes at the Royal Free Hospital, as well as Head of the UCL Immunology Centre focussed on Cancer Immunology and Immunodeficiency. The main focus of Professor Stauss’ work is the analysis of antigen-specific T lymphocyte responses to tumours and the development of immunotherapy approaches for cancer treatment. The transfer of T cell receptor (TCR) genes provides an exciting strategy to equip patient T lymphocytes with well-characterized TCRs, allowing the gene modified T cells to attack tumour cells.

The experimental platform developed by Professor Stauss and his group in London involves extensive analysis of target antigen expression and the definition of effective T cell responses. Murine models are used to test the safety and efficacy of new immunotherapy protocols, and the group is currently translating their research into phase I/II clinical trials with the goal of establishing effective immunity in patients. Professor Stauss has authored over 70 research papers as well as reviews and book chapters.
